The phases of the moon & your health, whilst seemingly two complete opposite ends of the spectrums of science, lunar phases can (& do) impact your health in more ways than you will be aware.
The lunar calendar runs on a 29.5 day cycle, during this cycle the moon is illuminated by the position of the Sun in relation to the Earth, as the moon moves through its orbit. The moon itself emits no light, but the moon having a reflective surface means that what we are actually seeing when we look at the moon is the reflective light which is emitted by the Sun; it is the sunlight shown back to us. How much of the moon we are able to see is dependent upon these orbital alignments.
The new moon is the invisible phase when the illuminated side of the moon faces the Sun (we can’t see it). This is the darkest period in our night sky, but perfect of stargazing as there is little light interference from the moon.
Once a month, during the full moon we are able to see the full reflection of the moon in full illumination as the illuminated side of the moon faces the Earth. The face of the moon is now revealed to us & the night sky is filled with light.
To transition between these two lunar events, the moon will appear to grow from the dark, new-moon phase in what is known as the waxing phase (wax means to increase) until it reaches the full-moon phase. The moon will then appear to shrink again when transitioning to the new-moon phase, known as the waning phase (wane means to decrease).
So, you’ll have a contact flux of increase-decrease, expand-contract, light-dark over a 29.5 day cycle.
During these full moon & new moon phases, the gravitational forces which affect the tides of the oceans are maximised, meaning we will see higher tides during these phases.
What has this all got to do with our health though, Dee?
Well, now that you understand the science behind the phases of the moon, let me explain further…
Firstly, you must understand that your body is around 65%-70% water, meaning that you, in many ways, are a drop in the ocean & so your body will be affected by lunar phases, just as the oceans are affected.
Your body is also in this constant flux of expand-contract, increase-decrease, light-dark over a 29.5 day cycle, meaning that yes, you will sometimes feel better & sometimes feel worse. You’ll sometimes feel pain-free & sometimes feel in pain, as everything expands & contracts in this tidal ebb & flow.
You can imagine that if you have a localised inflammation or injury, that during this expansion & contraction, you will feel increased pain during this flux which will likely peak during the full-moon phase & new-moon phase in the same way that the tides will expand to the maximum capacity, during this time.
If you have inflammation to your stomach, such as an ulcer or GERD, you will see the increase in pain during the new-moon & full-moon phase, as your tissues have expanded to full capacity, just as the tides are at full capacity.
Issues affecting the lungs of kidneys (organs relating to fluid) will be increased during the new-moon & full-moon phases, just as the tides. If you have a cough, it will affect you more so during this time, because the fluid in your lungs will have expanded.
Now, to the brain… we’ve all heard of full-moon madness. The words ‘lunacy’ & ‘lunatic’ actually are derived from the word ‘lunar’, referring to the moon, because incidents of aggression, violence, trauma, suicide & worsening of mental disorders are seen to increase during the full-moon phase (which is widely reported by hospitals worldwide).
Given that the brain is 95% water, it takes no stretch of the imagination to understand WHY this increase does occur.
The ‘why’ isn’t necessarily being that the moon or tides are at fault & there is nothing you or I can do about it; accept our fate & it is what it is. More so, the moon itself is a great tool to reveal to you or to ‘illuminate’ the areas in your life which require your attention.
As explained earlier, the moon has a reflective surface, so we can consider the moon as a giant mirror in our universe. It does literally reflect back to us the light of the Sun, but during these orbital phases, it also reflects back to us our own truths. The Sun is associated with light, which can cast a shadow or adjust its position & expose the shadows. The light is associated with truth & the darkness is associated with things being hidden.
Often, the illnesses that affect the human body lie in the shadows, awaiting detection or diagnosis. Not everything is always evident nor obvious & so we are left searching for answers, seeking advice, seeking medical diagnostics. Symptoms can be vague, they can come & go (usually with the phases of the moon if you take the time to observe), so medical diagnoses can often elude us because well, if we are uncertain of our symptoms, how can the medical community give us an answer? There is no clarity, only uncertainty & symptoms hiding within our shadows, coming & going.
So, when the moon is at its fullest, illuminating our sky, so it will illuminate & magnify your symptoms to bring your awareness to what requires your full (moon) attention. This is why you may feel worsening of symptoms during the full moon. The moon is your mirror, it shows you your reflection with clarity, in order for you to be able to heal what needs to be healed, take action & move forward. The full moon will magnify whatever is going on in your life at the moment in order to reveal too you the truth, whether it is magnifying how amazing you feel or magnifying how crap you feel.
Full moon = Illumination, magnification, clarity
When the moon is at it’s darkest during the new-moon phase, you will feel increased pain but without clarity, you will feel fatigue, depression, exhaustion, confusion. You will feel sad without knowing why you feel sad, you will feel tired without knowing why you feel tired.
And you will feel this all because the moon is at it’s darkest, so too are you in your darkness.
The new moon is a time for introspection (to go within), accept that at this time you need more rest, set an intention for a new start (new-moon/new-start) & when the moon starts to wax again (to grow/expand towards full-moon once again), so too will your energy & capacity for clarity.
New moon = Darkness, shadows, introspection
These ebbs & flows can be used to your advantage, rather than accepted as fate.
The moon phases will not create anything which isn’t already there (in terms of lunacy or full moon crazies) but the full moon WILL tap you on the shoulder & say “Hey, buddy… um, you might’ve not realized this was still here… Here it is, go fix it, talk about it, heal it, speak it, resolve it etc”.
It will ONLY show you what was already there. Like a mirror.
And the beauty of it is that you have a brand new opportunity to work on this healing process each month, with each 29.5 day cycle. And depending on how much you have worked on yourself, (your growth & your health & your healing), each month the moon will reflect back to you your progress at the full moon.
The aim is to keep focused on your health & wellness everyday (physical & emotional wellness) so that each month on the full moon you will feel absolutely amazing & vibrant & clear in your goals, intentions & path which will then be magnified to you as a big thumbs up from the universe that, “Hey, you’re doing amazing, kiddo. Keep it up”.
Focus on you so that you love what you see in that full-moon reflection each month.

Chronic inflammation plays a role in common disorders such as anxiety & depression, ADHD, schizophrenia, asthma, diabetes, some forms of cancer, migraine, myopathy, gastrointestinal disorders such as IBD & IBS, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s, autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, coeliac disease, cardiovascular disease, disease of the joints, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, to name but a few.
Common to these types of pro-inflammatory disorders is that they appear amongst the top 5 causes of death amongst men & women in Australia as well as plaguing society as a whole, leading to disability of young & old alike.
What exactly is inflammation & does it serve a purpose?
Inflammation forms a natural part of the body's defense mechanism. It is the process in which the immune system recognizes & removes harmful substances or stimuli from the body in order for the healing process to begin.
Inflammation is basically your body trying to remove the harmful substance & begin the process of healing itself. The problem is that if we continue to ingest or expose ourselves to environmental toxins & pro-inflammatory substances, our bodies cannot keep up & this is where disease manifests.
Unfortunately, the modern diet of processed food is flooded with chemicals, additives, preservatives & toxins that most of us have no idea what we are eating. And if you combine that with low levels of physical activity which slows down the body's natural detoxification processes, you are creating the perfect storm for chronic disease to manifest.
You literally are a result of what you eat, drink, do or don’t do & you manifest this into your reality one bite at a time.
Eating a healthy diet can often be seen as a sacrifice people are unwilling to make because they don’t want to give up their favourite meals of convenience. But the reality is that the more healthful foods you include in your diet, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the less you’ll want to reach out for those meals of convenience because feeling healthy & well is sure damn addictive.
I tend to view it from a different perspective in that I am no longer willing to sacrifice my health & well-being for the sake of the modern diet.
The food you eat can either be the safest & most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.
